John's favorite pastimes include scuba diving.



1954 was Bob's rookie year in the majors, although he had appeared with the Cubs in 8 games at the end of the 1953 season. He hit .333 for those games. Last season he batted .241. He had 15 doubles, 4 triples and 1 homer among his 97 hits and he batted in 19 runs. Bob began in pro ball in 1946 with the team in his native Visalia. He played with Los Angeles the three seasons prior to his entry into major league baseball, batting .249, .279, and .287 respectively.



Fast ball pitcher. Came to the Athletics from the Portland Club of the Pacific Coast League, where, in 1929, he won 21 games and lost 25 for a sixth place club, and pitched in 370 innings, more than any other twirler in the league. Mahaffey began his professional career with Columbia in the South Atlantic League in 1925. He had a tryout with Pittsburgh the next year, but failed to make the grade. He is a right-hander, 30 years old, six feet tall, and weighs 180 pounds. Last year he won 13 games and lost 13, pitching for the Athletics.
