The 1916 Sporting News M101-4 set was offered as a marketing promotion by C.C. Spink and Son, publishers of The Sporting News, with the backs either blank, bearing the publication’s name, or carrying one of several different advertisements.
Jim Tabor is rated by experts as one of the greatest infield prospects to come up to the major leagues in recent years: Jim was a student at the University of Alabama until signed up by the Boston Red Sox who brought him up from Little Rock. With Little Rock, Tabor batted .295, and drove in 94 runs. Jim holds the distinction of hitting a home run with the bases full off of Bob Feller in an exhibition game during spring practice.
After playing 20 games for the White Sox, the fleet-footed outfielder came to the A's early last season, in a trade. Bill gained the reputation as a long ball hitter with his solid batting in the Minors. At Memphis in '50 he poled 36 homers, drove in 125 runs and hit .311. After 2 years in Service, Bill returned to belt 34 homers and was brought up to the Majors.
