Originally purchased for pinch-hit duty and an occasional spell in the outfield, "Lou" Finney has been one of the main forces in the Boston Red Sox drive for the pennant this year. The Sox bought Finney from the Athletics in May last year. When "Dom" DiMaggio was injured early this season, Finney replaced him in the Hub outfield. Finney, to date, is still in the outfield, and hitting right up with the league leaders. Finney was with the A's steadily from 1933 until he was traded, playing the outfield and first base. He has always been a heavy, dangerous hitter and as a pinch-hitter last year batted .394, getting 13 hits and driving in 15 runs.
William Mitchell, pitcher of the Cleveland American League Club, was born at Sardis, Miss., December 1, 1888. At the University of Mississippi he broke all records for strike-outs for three years. He joined the San Antonio Texas League Club in 1909, and in his first season made a world's professional record, striking out twenty Galveston batters in one game of nine innings. He was signed by Cleveland late in 1909, and has been with the Naps ever since.
