The Giant Captain started his pro baseball career in the Majors with the Braves in '46. He was sent down to Milwaukee in '47 where he hit .303 and led the American Association in doubles (49). Playing in 137 games and hitting .322 for the Braves in '48, Al was named National League Rookie of the Year. The Giants obtained him after the '49 season. In '51, Al hit 2 grand slam homers, led the league with 41 doubles and paced NL Shortstops in Double Plays with 141.



Divided 1951 between San Diego and Boston. In 33 games for the Pacific Coast League club, hitting .286. In 99 games in the majors, batting .239. Hit 11 homers. Drove in 57 runs. Walt was a sensation in 1950 when the Sox called him up from Louisville. Hit .322 for 136 games.
