The vet reliever retired 27 straight batters in 8 relief appearances in 1954. Don won 13 games in 1949, his first season in the minors.
The most publicized ball-player of World War II, the "Hondo Hurricane" became a Giant in 1947. Clint had so much talent that they didn't know where to play him. He pitched, played first base and the outfield and finally remained an outfielder at the end of 1950. In 4 seasons as a pitcher, he had a 29-29 record. At the plate, he hit .309 in '47 and .302 in '50. In March of 1952 he was optioned to Minneapolis to get more experience in the outfield.
Wade's .362 average after the 1997 All-Star break was the third-best mark in the majors. He also ranked third with a .417 average during the month of September.
