Darrell was a jack-of-all-trades when he began his minor league career. In 1960, he played as an infielder-outfielder-pitcher before switching fulltime to the mound. Darrell was originally signed by the Pirates as an outfielder. After sitting out the 1961 campaign, Darrell was signed as a hurler by the Houston club.
On a day when big-league players Cavan Biggio and Gregory Polanco were in the lineup for Triple-A Buffalo, Smith proved to be the talk of the town. Against Rochester, the prospect lashed a career-high five hits, scored four runs and plated two others to lead a high-powered offense in a 20-3 rout.
Few rookies ever made a more auspicious debut than Jablonski who batted across 112 runs in 1953 for the Cardinals. Just 26, Ray is noted for his steady chatter and solid infield play. A native of Chicago, he was developed in the Cardinal farm system with stops in Milford, Columbus (Ga.), Winston-Salem and Rochester.
