One of the best leadoff hitters in Major League Baseball, Johnny scored 100 runs and stole 25 bases for the 6th consecutive year in 2003, his 2nd campaign with the Boston Red Sox. He made his 1st All-Star roster the previous year while leading the American League with 11 triples. In 2000, while playing for Kansas City, he topped the league with 46 stolen bases.

By firing 2 no-hitters in '52 Virgil equalled a Major League record. He came to the Browns during '52 after putting in 10 seasons with the Tigers. In every season except '47, he won more than he lost. "Fire Trucks" had a 19-11 record and led the AL in Strikeouts in '49. Some of Virgil's better years at Detroit were '42 (14-8), '43 (16-10), '46 (14-9) '48 (14-13), and '51 (13-8). He came up to the AL after leading the IL with 204 Strikeouts at Buffalo in '41.
