After breaking into pro ball with a 280 B.A. for West Frankfort in '47, "Rip" chalked up 3 straight seasons of .300 hitting. At Fresno, in '48 he hit .322 including 23 HR's and 12 RBI's. With Winston-Salem in '49 he had 20 HR's and a .300 mark. In '50 with Columbus, Ga., "Rip" had a .323 average. A 10 second-100 yard dash man, "Rip stole 45 bases in his first year of pro ball.
Fleet-footed and a good line-drive hitter, Willie topped the Texas League with 14 triples in 1966. The next year, the promising youngster's batting average climbed 40 points and Willie earned himself a berth on the Texas League's All-Star team.
