Smokey was in 102 games for the Phills in 1953 and batted a nice .292. He had 17 doubles and batted in 36 runs. The Chicago Cubs was his previous major league team. He began in 1944 with Lockport, then went to Portsmouth. The service occupied his time until 1946. With Los Angeles, Macon and Fayetteville in 1947. Then Nashville, Chicago, Los Angeles, Springfield, Chicago again and finally the Phils.
Hank is better known for his fielding ability but in '47 for Springfield in the 3-1 League he hit .366 to top the League, and clouted 17 Homers. 1940 was Hank's 1st year in baseball. He was in the Navy in 1945. Hank has also tried his hand at pitching. He appeared in 7 games for Springfield during '46 and 47 winning 2 games against 0 losses. Hank came up to the Browns in '48, was sent to Baltimore in '49 and came back to the Browns for good in '50.
Joseph Jackson, outfielder of the Cleveland American League team, was born in Brandon Mill, S. C., July 16, 1887. In 1905 and 1906 he played with various semi-professional teams in the vicinity of Greenville, S. C. He played with the Greenville Club of the South Carolina League in 1907, and joined the Philadelphia Athletics in 1908. He was farmed out to Savannah in 1909, and in 1910 was released to New Orleans. He joined the Cleveland team late in 1910.
