"Bill Terry holds the title of best-hitting first baseman of the National League with an average of .322 and one of its leading batters. Bill Terry is a Southerner and a southpaw. He was born in Atlanta, Ga., in 1898 and began professional baseball in 1914 with the Atlanta team. After playing around with the Southern teams he came to the Giants in 1923 as first baseman, In 1932 he succeeded John McGraw as manager and last year piloted his team to the National League pennant and World championship. He in six feet, one inch tall and weighs 200 pounds. He bats and throws left-handed."

He came from the St. Mary's College campus to Kansas City in 1951 to hit .288. Andy hit .284 the next year and the Yanks gave him a brief trial in mid-season. He returned in '53 to make the grade.
