There are some who regard "Charley" Gehringer as the greatest second baseman of all time and they have plenty to argue with. Gehringer's record over a period of 16 years with the Tigers is a brilliant one. He has a lifetime batting mark of .327, with 2570 hits, 129 runs-batted-in and 170 home runs. His fielding average is .976 and last year, although out of action for a while, was still the best second baseman in the league in fielding. He has a World Series batting mark of .377, and appearing in six of the seven All-Star games, averaging .500. He has captured almost every hitting title except the homer crown at least once in his career, and holds numerous fielding records. He was voted the most valuable player in the league in 1937, when he was batting champion with a mark of .371.

He's been the first base coach for the Dodgers since '48 under 3 different managers, Durocher, Shotton and Dressen. Jake was a playing-manager from '29 through '33.
