Manager Chicago White Sox. Could earn his living as singer if he weren't in baseball. Has sung in vaudeville in Winter months. Only player of Portuguese descent in big league. Played in National League with Cincinnati four years, went to Newark for a year, then came to American League with Cleveland. Traded to White Sox in 1931. Appointed manager in 1932. Plays first base. Is good hitter, although he batted only 135 in 18 games last year. Born in Oakland, Cal., in 1900. Is five feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds, batting and throwing right-handed.



Standing only 5'9", the Boston Red Sox center-fielder smacked American League pitching in 1950 for a .328 average.



Al is a graduate of Duke University where he received his degree in mathematics in 1956. He was one of the first players selected by the Colt .45's in the NL player draft of 1961. Off to a slow start last season, the speedster batted close to .350 during the second half to boost his season mark to .285, second best on the club. He led the club in triples with nine and in walks with 72.
