"Peanuts" Lowrey was with the Reds and Cardinals in 1950. He got into a total of 108 games, batting .234. Began in baseball in 1937. First hit the majors for 27 games with the Chicago Cubs in 1942. With them again in 1943. In 130 games, hitting .292. With 1 year out for the service, Harry remained with the Cubs until traded to the Reds in June 1949. In 1 World Series. On 1 All-Star team.
After Smitty finished high school he signed a contract with Statesville, N. C. The next year he moved to Marion, Ohio. His work impressed one of the managers in the Reds' chain who sug- gested that the Cincinnati organization draft him. Columbia followed the manager's suggestion and there has been no regret among the Redlegs. Managers in the Texas League where he pitched all praised him highly before he came to the majors.
Jim, one of the real speed boys in the American League, began the 1952 season with the Chicago White Sox. After appearing in 16 games for them he was traded to the Washington Senators. Actually, Jim was in a slump most of the season, so the average is not a true evaluation. The preceding year Jim batted .283 for the White Sox. He's been in baseball since 1948.
