"Ozark Ike" was the A's top slugger in '52 with a Slugging Average of .452. He also led the club in Total Bases, RBI's and Homers. Gus was one of the 4 men with 100 or more RBI's in the AL in '52. He tied a Major League mark in '51 when he smacked 6 homers in 3 straight games. In '51 he also led the League in HR's (33) and RBI's (129). The White Sox brought him up to the majors in '49 and traded him to the A's in '51.
"Rabbit" Warstler, started his professional baseball career with the Indianapolis Club of the American Association in 1927, moving on to Quincy of the Three-I League after the season was under way, with whom he batted .351. The next three years Warstler was the regular shortstop of the Indianapolis Club, and became the property of the Boston Red Sox in the middle of the 1930 season. Warstler alternated between shortstop and second base for the Red Sox until the end of the 1933 season when he was traded to the Philadelphia Athletics. He was the regular second baseman for the A's until the middle of the 1936 season when he became the property of the Boston Bees via the waiver route. "Rabbit" has been the sparkplug of the Boston Bees infield since that time. His 9-year major-league record shows that Warstler has taken part in 1013 games, getting 804 hits for an average of .228.
The Reds spotted Ted in 1945 when they were training at the University of Indiana. Not only was he a star baseball player, but also an All-American end on the football team. After leading 2 minor leagues in batting with .352 in 1946 and .377 in 1947, Ted became the Reds' first baseman in 1948. In '51 he was the best fielding first baseman in the National League. He had a great year in '50. hitting 25 homers and batting .307.
