Upon joining the Yankees in 2014, Masahiro made the hype look understated. His 46 strikeouts were the third-most since 1900 for a pitcher in his first five Major League starts.
One of the coming stars in the major leagues, Johnny came to the Reds after being voted The Minor League Player of the Year in 1967. Johnny certainly took a fancy to big league pitching as he cracked out 15 homers, 40 doubles and knocked in 82 runs. He was named to the Topps All-Star Rookie Team in 1968!
The Athletics were excited with the fantastic progress shown by this 22 year old in 1968. His 29 home runs was tops on the Athletics and the 4th best mark in the American League. He also led Oakland with 74 runs batted in last year.
