In 1943 at Los Angeles, Andy led the Pacific Coast League in batting with .356 and was brought up to the Cubs at the end of the season. He was a Cub regular until the middle of the 1951 season when he was traded to the Dodgers. A powerful slugger, Andy was second in the League in homers in 1950 with 36 and was tied for 5th in 1951. In 1950 he hit 3 home runs in 1 game. He made the Major League All-Star Team in 1945.
In 1944 with Toledo Mudhens Babe hit .350 and won American Association's Most Valuable Player award, despite many ailments. His good showing earned him a trial with St. Louis Browns, as an outfielder. With Toledo in 1947 he caught 89 games, appeared in a total of 110 games, and his .319 batting average included 15 homers and 20 doubles.
After spending his first 2 years in pro ball with Hollywood and Salem, Ed served 3 years in the Army Infantry and saw action in the Pacific. Back with Hollywood in '46, he won 20 games and led the Pacific Coast League in Strikeouts (234). In '47, he had a 4-9 mark with the Reds and was sent to Syracuse where he won 15 in '48. Ed was recalled in 1949 by the Reds. In March of 1952, the Reds optioned him to Kansas City and he's subject to recall.
