With the Yanks' farm team, the Newark Bears in 1948, Gerry played in 142 games, hitting .251 and driving in 62 runs. He played short, second and third for the Bears. Spent 1947 with Kansas City where he hit .278 in 131 games. Played prep, Legion and semi-pro ball before he joined organized baseball in 1942. Served as a Marine pilot.



Purchased from Pacific Coast League, May 19, 1952, after 16 years of professional umpiring, all in the PCL... jumped from sandlot officiating in San Diego to Coast League in 1936... worked in every one of league's All-Star games... worked 1953 major league All-Star game... born in St. Louis, lives now in Palo Alto, California... of German descent... married in 1935, no children.



William L. James, right-handed spit-ball pitcher of the Boston National League Club, was born in Placer County, Cal., March 12, 1892, and played his first professional ball with the Seattle Club, of the Northwestern League, in 1912. After one season of minor league ball, James was drafted by Boston, but did not prove much of a success for his first season, showing poor control. In 1914, however, he pitched wonderful ball in the championship race and in the world's series against the Athletics, being credited with two victories against the American League champions.
