THE GREATEST FIELDING PLAY I'VE SEEN by Sammy White. It was made by Willie Miranda, playing for the New York Yankees. With the tying and winning runs on second and third for Boston, and two out, Miranda went far into the hole to his right at shortstop and made an impossible stop. Without hesitation he threw to first, without looking or breaking stride. The ball beat the runner by half a step and stopped a rally that would have meant the ball game. The play particularly impressed me, because I was the runner!
In just his second Major League start for Boston on 9/1/07, Buchholz put his name in the history books with a stellar 115-pitch no-hitter against Baltimore. The lanky right-hander was still firing away in the ninth inning as he recorded his eighth and ninth strikeouts of the game in that frame. He became the 17th hurler in Red Sox history to spin a no-hitter.
