Robin logged only 64 games on the farms before debuting at 18 in 1974 the genesis of a Hall-of-Fame career that featured two AL MVP Awards. Three decades after his retirement, he remains one of six players with 3,000+ hits, 250+ homers and 250+ steals.

Charley Gehringer of the Detroit Tigers is one of those rare infielders who couples great skill in the field with hard hitting at the plate. Usually clever infielders are shy on batting ability, because as young- sters they gave most of their time to fielding and very little to batting. Remember, boys, a hard hitter can always find a place on any team, even though he may be an awkward and sloppy fielder. Never miss a chance to practice hitting and as long as you can find a friend who is patient enough to throw the ball up, keep swinging.

George McQuinn was the top fielding first-baseman in the American League last year. Tied for crown honors with Hank Greenberg in 1939, McQuinn took all the glory in 1940 with an average of .992, participating in 157 double plays and making only 13 errors in 151 games. While his batting average fell below 300, McQuinn drove in 84 runs for the troublesome Brownies, including 16 home runs, 10 triples and 39 two-baggers. This is his fourth season with the vastly improved St. Louis club.
