Coffee Talk Name that player!
They call him "Fidgety Phil". He hitches his trousers, pulls at his cap and tramps around the pitcher's box, before he delivers the ball. But when he does let the ball go, there's plenty of stuff on it. He won 14 games last year and lost 12. Phil Collins hails from Chicago. He is a righthander, five feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. He has been with the Phils four years, coming up from New Orleans, in the Southern Association, where he had won 16 and lost 14 in 1928.
Jimmy has been in the Dodgers' chain since 1962. In 1963 and 1964 at Salem, the catcher hit .302 and .301. Last season, the righty batter hit .284 in the P.C.L. In '65, the tall six-foot four-inch right-hander won 14 ballgames for Spokane. Last season, Bill won 13 while striking out an impressive amount of 217 batters.
Called "Hopalong" by his teammates, Bill almost had his baseball career cut short as a youngster, when he fell from a horse and shattered his ankle. He overcame this difficulty and started in pro ball in 1943. He earned a berth with the Cards at the end of the '49 season by playing great ball at Columbus in 1948 and '49. In '48 he hit .299, 25 Homers and had 114 RBI's, and .329, 21 Homers and 111 RBI's in '49. Bill hit .281 in '50 and was traded to the Pirates in 1951.
