Manager Ray Blades, pointing the St. Louis Cardinals toward a pennant, has high hopes for left-hander "Tom" Sunkel. Sunkel, who came to the Cards last year from Atlanta where he won 21 and lost only 5, did not see much action with the Cards but showed enough to earn a crack at a regular berth. He won 4 and lost 4 last year, including among his triumphs a nifty two-hit shutout over the New York Giants. Speed is one of the main factors in Sunkel's pitching - he topped the Southern Association in that department in 1938, and struck out 54 in the 85 innings he hurled last year.

Entered organized baseball in 1949. Began the season with San Diego, Pacific Coast League. Batted .363 for 80 games. Hit 25 home runs, and drove in 92 tallies. Came up to the Indians for 21 games toward end of campaign. In 141 games for the Indians in 1950. Hit .280. Slammed 28 homers. Drove in 107 runs. Kept out of lineup by a leg injury for the first few weeks of the 1951 season.

Tony Cuccinello was a top-notch infielder for the Reds, Dodgers and Braves from 1930 to 1943. During that time he established a record for the most double-plays by a second baseman. He hit over .300 five seasons and owns a fine .280 lifetime major league batting average. In 1957, Tony came to Chicago as a coach. Ray Berres begins his twelfth year as a White Sox coach this season. Before joining Chicago, he was a coach with the Braves and with Minneapolis in the A.A. Johnny Cooney was one of the most versatile in the National League from 1922 until 1944. He pitched - compiling a record of 34-44, played the outfield and first base, and has a lifetime .286 batting mark. In 1957 he joined the Sox coaching staff. Don Gutteridge made his mark playing third base for the Cards from 1936 to 1945. He was a sure-handed fielder and fine clutch hitter.
