By Sept. 2 of last season, Curt had piled up a 17-8 record. He was a cinch to be a 20-game winner. But his National Guard unit was activated. Off Curt went to the Army. He is considered one of the best pitching prospects discovered in recent years. The Phils landed him, after his graduation from high school. Pitched first big-league game on the last day of the 1947 season.
In the second game of a double-header, May 6, Cliff pitched the Pirates to a win over the Braves in the only National League no-hitter of the 1951 season. Later traded to the Cardinals. In 10 games for the Pirates, 21 for the Cards. Wound up the season with 14 wins, 12 losses.
The year 1940 was a big year for Frank Hayes. The finely-built catcher of the Philadelphia Athletics, besides being one of the busiest backstops in the league, hit .308 for the season, marking the first time in his career that he had topped the .300 mark. Hayes was a valuable man on the A's roster, bringing in 70 runs on 143 hits, which included 16 home runs. He represented the A's in the All-Star game against the National League.
