Ranks among the finest defense men in the game. Formerly veteran third-sacker of the Pirates. Joined Bucs in '39 and played all infield positions. Ace batsman as well. Hit .297 in '47, his best Major league mark so far. Traded to Cubs in '48. Snared 120 hits, 42 RBI for a .267 batting average.
Compiled an 8 and 4 record in 1951. Appeared in a total of 24 games. Pitched 139 innings. Struck out 57 batters. "The Cat" recorded an earned run average of 3.24. With the Cards continuously since 1943. Holds record for most wins by a lefty in a World Series (3 in 1946).
George was drafted by the St. Louis Browns in December 1952, and sent outright to Detroit in April, 1953. He appeared in 1 game for the Tigers, then he went to Springfield of the International League. He hit .266 in 132 games. He began in baseball in 1948, hitting .349 for Johnstown in the Mid Atlantic League. He attended University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University and was a star football player. He received honorable mention on an All American team.
