George was drafted by the St. Louis Browns in December 1952, and sent outright to Detroit in April, 1953. He appeared in 1 game for the Tigers, then he went to Springfield of the International League. He hit .266 in 132 games. He began in baseball in 1948, hitting .349 for Johnstown in the Mid Atlantic League. He attended University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University and was a star football player. He received honorable mention on an All American team.
