It's easy to swing and miss when you're swinging for the fences, and only the best of the best can rack up the round-trippers without an exorbitant strikeout total as well. Take Fielder, for instance. In 2007, the 23-year-old became the youngest player with at least 50 homers and a 1.000 OPS while whiffing fewer than 125 times.
Jim has traveled a lot since he entered organized baseball in 1943. However, he pitched well for a weak hitting team in 1952, so the indications are that he can settle down for a stay in Boston. He walked 90 batters and struck out 104. His earned run average was 4.23. He pitched for Boston in 1945, part of 1946, for Philadelphia briefly in 1949 and then again for Boston in 1951.
Pitchers should never take their full windup with runners on first and second. With runners in these positions, take several looks in their direction to warn them not to take liberties, even throwing once or twice, and then deliver the ball to the batter with a single arm motion. A veteran pitcher like Red Lucas of Cincinnati, will sometimes take a windup with a man on third base, but is always careful to see that he does not try to steal home. In cases where this happens while the pitcher is in the middle of his motion, throw high and toward the batter so that he cannot swing at the ball and must fall away from the plate, thus giving the catcher a chance to tag the runner.
