Walt is one of the biggest men in baseball. He came to the White Sox from the Detroit Tigers, his 1954 team. He was in 107 games for the Tigers last season batting .281. He had 90 hits for a total of 120 bases and he hit 4 home runs batting in 44 tallies. He began in organized ball in 1947 with Scranton of the Eastern League and first came to the majors for a brief appearance with the Red Sox at the end of the 1949 season. He was with the Red Sox for part of the 1950 and 1951 seasons, then in 1952 was traded to the Tigers.

MY BIGGEST THRILL IN BASEBALL by Frank Thomas. My biggest thrill happened in 1953. I was up at bat with the bases loaded against the Giants. Dave Koslo was pitching. My Mom and Dad were sitting in the stands. I hit a home run to win the ball game 6-5. That made me feel very good. After I had taken my shower and come out of the club house, my Mom and Dad were waiting for me. I was a very happy boy. Incidentally, this was during my first full year in the major leagues.

Nervous fidgeting with baseball cap earned him nickname. Began in majors with Cards, then was traded to Phils in 1947. At end of 1948 went to Chicago Cubs. Led NL in hitting and triples in 1947. Was first player in NL to lead in hitting while playing with more than one club during same season. In three World's Series and on two All-Star teams.
