Tom spent 8 years traveling around in minor leagues before he hit majors with Boston Red Sox at end of 1943 season. His best major league year was in 1945 when he hit .305 for the Bosox while playing outfield and at first base in 100 games. He was sold to Senators at beginning of 1947 season. Last season he appeared in 92 games for Senators and hit .257.
In his first professional season back in 1960, Joe showed his great hitting ability by leading the Northern League with a .344 batting average. He jumped to the majors the following season and is now recognized as the best catcher in the league.
