From there he went to Charleston of the Mid-Atlantic League where he batted an even .400 for the season. Two years followed with the Beaumont team again and he went to Detroit in 1939. 1940 was a great year for him, batting .340, leading the American League in triples and tied for most hits. Then the war set him back three years.
