Started in organized baseball in 1946 with Wenatchee in the Western International League and hit .338. In 1947 he moved up to Sacramento and hit .357 in 144 games. He was third in the league in base stealing, with 25. He caught 102 games for the Pirates in his rookie year, and hit .267. He is regarded as a great prospect.
