The Cards purchased the young Mexican from the San Diego team in the Pacific Coast League for a good amount of money. His full name is Guillermo Romero Luna. In high school he played football, soccer and golf. During the winter he plays baseball. In 1951 with Tiajuana of the Southwestern International League he won 26 games while losing 13. He struck out 318 men and had the lowest earned run average in the circuit, 2.52. He still lives in Mexico.
Tom showed marked improvement in each of his last 4 seasons as he helped pitch Montreal to 3 straight International League Pennants. He won 9 games in '50, 12 in '51, 14 in '52. Last year he had the best Won-Lost Percentage in the International League. With Schenectady in '48 he set a Canadian-American League record by fanning 25 batters in a 15-inning game.
Nicknamed "Country," because he can hit a ball "a country mile." Batted .281 for 123 games in 1951. Had 115 hits good for 160 total bases. Drove in 64 runs. Hit 4 home runs, 8 triples, 17 doubles. In baseball since 1935, and with Cardinals since 1938. In 8 All-Star games.
