Ed, who served the Athletics as a coach last season, takes over the managerial reins of the club in 1963. A former pitching ace, the lefty won 166 ballgames during his big league career. In 1937, Ed began his professional career at first base. Switching to the mound, the hurler was brought up to the Chicago White Sox in 1944. Ed was traded to the New York Yankees in 1948 and he immediately became one of their stars. In '51, Ed won two World Series games, allowing only 1 earned run in 18 innings. During the 1951 season, the southpaw won 21 ballgames and pitched in the All-Star game. In 1956, Ed managed the Richmond Virginians in the International League. In '60 & '61, the former hill whiz was the pitching coach for the New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins.

No baseball fan will ever forget "Dusty's" amazing batting feats that led the Giants to the '54 World Championship. During the regular season, his sensational pinch-hitting provided the Giants' margin of victory time after time. In the Series he continued to astound the baseball world by winning the 1st game with a Homer and playing the major role in the Giants' 4 game sweep.

Oct. 2, 1953 was the day Carl Erskine set a new World Series record by striking out 14 Yankees. It was a good all-around year for Erskine as he won 20 games during the season for Brooklyn. On June 19, 1952 he threw a no-hitter against Chicago, permitting only one base runner. He combines a sharp curve with fine speed to baffle batters.
