Frank E. Smith, pitcher of the Baltimore Federal League team, was born at Pittsburgh, Pa., on October 28, 1879. His first engagement was with the Erie, Pa., team in 1901. The next season found him with the Raleigh team of the Carolina State League. In 1903 he was playing with Birmingham, Ala., of the Southern League, when President Comiskey, of Chicago Americans, drafted him. He pitched with Chicago up to the middle of 1910, when he was traded to Boston Americans. The following season found him in Cincinnati, from which team he went over to the Federal League in 1914.
Named as "Minor League Player of the Year" by The Sporting News in 1968 after his outstanding season at Rochester, Merv led IL that year in Batting, Runs & Walks and was selected as loop's MVP. Merv made the AL All-Star team in 1971.
Often just flat-out unhittable, Mariano is challenging Dave Righetti as the top closer in the history of the Yankees. Already fifth on the franchise saves list, his total of 79 over the past two seasons eclipsed Rag's team record of 77 set in 1986-87. Among AL relievers in 1998, Rivera ranked second in ERA (1.91), sixth in saves (36). sixth in runners allowed per 9 IP (9.7) and eighth in OPP AVG with men in scoring position (167).
