"Arkie" Vaughan, a protege of the famous Honus Wagner, started his baseball career with the Wichita Club in 1931, joined the Pittsburgh Pirates the following year and has been their regular shortstop ever since. He has never hit under .300 in the major leagues, and was the leading batsman of the National League in 1935, with an average of .385. In 1936 Vaughan led the National League in runs scored with 122. In 7 years of major-league ball playing, Vaughan has had 1231 hits in 997 games, and has driven in 569 runs for a major-league batting average of .332.
Red Sox skipper Alex Cora did not need a long look at Enmanuel to find something he liked about the 2022 trade acquisition. "He can hit," Cora says. "I do believe the bat is going to play at the big-league level." It certainly did early. In his first 10 games following his mid-April promotion in 2023, Valdez went 12-for-35 (353) with an .875 OPS.
"On the basis of games won and lost and the consequential percentage, Lefty Grove ranked as the leading pitcher of the American League for 1933. In actual number of games won he tied with Alvin Crowder with 24, but lost 7 less which gave him the advantage on percentage. The Athletics paid more than $100,000 for Grove to the Baltimore club at the close of the 1924 season. In five years he had won 108 games for the Baltimore team, had lost only 36 and had piled up a score of 1107 strikeouts. He was born in Lonaconing, Md., in 1900, and stands 6 feet, 24 inches high. He weighs around 175 pounds. Bats and throws left-handed."
