Leading base stealer of the American. League in 1934 was Billy Werber, Boston Red Sox third baseman. Though speed of foot is essential in base stealing, Werber's close study of opposing pitchers' habits is his greatest asset. Many pitchers give some telltale sign when they are about to deliver the ball, an unconscious raising of a shoulder, or a nervous flip of the glove. Being alert, Werber was off with the pitcher's unconscious signal, getting the advantage of the extra split second. His daring on the base lines, tends to make opposing infielders, pitchers and catchers nervous, and thus adds to his success.
For the second time in three years, Roy Campanella was named "Most Valuable Player" in the National League in 1953. He also led the league in RBI's with 142. With the Dodgers since 1948, Roy has helped win pennants in 1949, 1952 and 1953. In addition to batting prowess, Roy has a strong arm and is fine handler of pitchers.
MY BIGGEST THRILL IN BASEBALL by Brooks Lawrence. I got my big thrill during our last 1954 series with the Giants. Haddix started the game for us, and was leading 4-2 when he developed arm trouble and was relieved by Brazle. He gave up a single and I was brought in to pitch to Al Dark. I threw him three straight strikes. Hank Thompson pinch hit and was retired on one pitch. My thrill is derived from the fact that I came into the game in a critical situation and retired the side on four pitches.
