Carl became the 8th man in the history of the American League to win two consecutive batting titles, when he topped his circuit again in 1968. A Triple Crown Winner back in '67!
Irishman. Began umpiring with North Carolina State League in 1940, with Michigan State League in 1941, and a year with the American Association before going into the military service 1943-1945. Returned to the American Association in 1945 and was brought up immediately to the American League. World Series umpire 1950 and 1952 and All-Star game umpire in 1953.
"Moose" turned down a pro football offer after being an All-American at the University of Connecticut. Hitting .359 at Birmingham in 1948, his 2nd year of pro ball, he got a trial with the Red Sox in 1949. Recalled in 1950, Walt hit .322, tied for the American League Lead in RBI's (144), walloped 34 Homers and made the Major League All-Star Team. One of 3 First Basemen in the League to take part in a Triple Play, he spent part of '51 at San Diego.
