Leslie J. Bush, better known as "Bullet Joe," is one of the young twirlers of the Philadelphia Americans. He was born at Brainard, Minn., November 27, 1893, and began his professional career with the Missoula, Mont., team in 1912. After three months with this team Bush was picked up by the Athletics and has been a valued member ever since. In 1913, his first season in the major leagues, he was used in the world's series as a "dark horse," and to the surprise of the fans gained a victory. He is a right-handed pitcher with terrific speed.
Joe is a good catcher, and a nice man to have on your side with a bat in his hands. He appeared in 82 games for the Athletics in 1953, batting a neat .296. He had 24 runs batted in and 15 doubles. Joe played freshman ball at Illinois, then went into the Coast Guard for three years. In 1947 with Savannah of the Sally League he hit .280 and was the league's best fielding catcher. In 1948 with Memphis he hit .352, and again led catchers in fielding.
