Harold W. Chase, first baseman of the Buffalo Federal League Club, was born at Los Gatos, Cal., October 22, 1884, and first gained fame at Alviso, Cal., and then with Victoria, of the Northwestern League, in 1903 as a pitcher. At this place he learned to play first base, and was signed by Los Angeles as a first baseman for 1904. He was drafted by the New York American League Club at the close of that season and was at once a sensation. He remained with New York until 1912, when he was traded to Chicago. He jumped Chicago last spring for Buffalo, of the Federais, and after court proceedings was declared eligible to play for that team. Chase is a left-handed thrower and, strange to say, a right-handed batsman.
The past season was a notable one in the major-league career of "Big Red" Ruffing, whose big league playing days go back to 1924, won 20 or more games for the fourth consecutive season; and brought his total number of victories to 214. Not too many pitchers in the history of baseball can show 200 or more victories. Last season Ruffing won 21 and lost 7 for the Yankees for the second successive year, had an earned run average of 2.94, and followed that brilliant season by pitching a four-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. His Series' record shows 5 wins against only 1 defeat. Included in his triumphs last year were four shutouts. Ruffing came to the Yankees from the Boston Red Sox in 1930.
Paul propelled three HR's against the Angels on 8-31-95; a three-run blast in the first inning, another three-runner in the second and a solo in the fifth.
