Although small and slender, Billy has a wonderfully strong and accurate arm. Called "The Horse" by his teammates, he was the best-fielding 3rd Baseman in the National League in 1950 (.963) and ranked 2nd in 1951. A World War II Veteran, Billy led the Inter-State League in '41, his 2nd year of pro ball, hitting .363 for Harrisburg. The Pirates brought him up at the end of '41 and traded him to the Dodgers in December, 1947. .290 was his best Big League batting mark.
In 69 games in 1950, hitting .171. In 1949, hit .257 in 101 games. Began in organized baseball with Hartford in 1938. Joined Braves late in 1939, and stayed with them until 1943. After discharge from service, came back to the Braves for 1946. Played 1 game. Then was switched to Indianapolis. There Sibby hit .343 as regular shortstop. Returned to Wigwam, 1947. Can play both infield and outfield.
A total of 15 different brands were used on the backs of the 1909 T206 Set cards (American Beauty, Broadleaf, Carolina Brights, Cycle, Drum, El Principle de Gales, Hindu, Lenox, Old Mill, Piedmont, Polar Bear, Sovereign, Sweet Caporal, Tolstoi, and Uzit) - but there are nearly 40 different backs with several of those brands having more than one variation.
