Sal's line drive which Hank Bauer caught for the last out came close to salvaging the '51 World Series for the Giants. He's wholly a Giant farm system product winning his first contract at a Polo Grounds' tryout. He was converted to a catcher by Carl Hubbell and batted .318 for Manchester in '46, his 1st year of pro ball. Sal has had trials with the Giants in '47, '48, '49 and '50 and finally stuck with them in '51.

The start of Mussina's 2008 campaign was less than ideal, leading some to question whether the 39-year-old would be better off in the bullpen. He answered with an emphatic no. Finding his groove and making history, the righty went on to become the first slinger since Sandy Koufax (1966) to win 20 games in the final season of his career.

"Rocky" was bought from Montreal last season after winning the International League's Most Valuable Player Award. He was 2nd in Homers and tops in Runs Batted In. In the Little World Series, he hit .647. "Rocky" previously had Major League trials with the Cards, Pirates, White Sox and Dodgers. At Lynchburg in '47 he led the Piedmont League in Hitting with .371.
