Coffee Talk Name that player!
Young "Pete" Coscarart, in his second season with the Brooklyn Dodgers, is being hailed by all Flatbush as the greatest second-baseman in the National League. Rival managers credit the Dodgers with having the best infield in the league, and Coscarart last year proved a main cog in it. Fielding is "Pete's" specialty, but he proved he can also come through with a timely hit by batting in 43 runs for the Dodgers in 115 games, and averaging .277, which is not at all bad for a freshman. Youngest of three ball-playing brothers, "Pete" started with Portland, where he was so valuable the fans gave him a farewell gift of $2500. He was purchased by the Dodgers in 1937, optioned to Nashville and recalled last year.
Played 17 years in O.B., 15 years in Majors. Coaches: Hank Aguirre, Ernie Banks, Larry Jansen, Pete Reiser
One of the prize rookies of last year was young Barney McCosky, of the Detroit Tigers. McCosky stepped right into the Tiger outfield and played through 147 games in noble fashion. He hit .311 for the season, drove in 58 runs, scored 120, and collected 190 hits. A fast man, plays centerfield, and hits in either the leadoff or second slot. McCosky has always been the property of the Tigers, receiv ing a three-year training course with Charleston, of the Middle Atlantic League, and Beaumont, in the Texas League, before being brought up. He led the Middle Atlantic League in hitting in 1936 with a mark of .400. The way he's been hitting this year, indicates he is far from a flash in the pan for the Tigers.
