Charlie, who was named manager of the Braves last season, is one of the game's most fabulous characters. He's a left handed banjo player and a noted teller of German dialect stories. He also was a great player during his many long years in baseball. He began in 1916 with the Philadelphia Athletics. He was in the minors after that, but returned to the majors at the end of the 1919 season with Pittsburgh. He remained with the Pirates through 1924, then went to the Cubs where he played through 1936. He led National League first basemen in fielding nine times.
