"Babe" Young seems destined to become one of the outstanding first basemen in the National League. Young, aggressive and fast, the former Fordham University athlete, has proved his merit after two reasons with the New York Giants. In his first complete season, last year, he batted only .286, but his 159 hits sent 101 runs scampering across the plate. Young's base hits included 17 home runs. He was close to the top in fielding with an Average of .992.
Bill came up to the Giants in the middle of the '52 season from Toledo-Charleston, where he had a 10-10 record. His first start in organized ball was with the A's in '45 after he came out of the Service. He had a 1-1 mark and was sent down for more experience. Bill got another shot at the Majors, in '50 with the White Sox and was sent to Detroit the same season. In '51, he was with Toledo. His best minor league record was 10-7 at Savannah in '47.
One of 18 children, Tommy began his pro ball career at the age of 17 with Fresno. After coming out of the Service in '45, Tommy hit .338 for Flesno and led the California State League in Stolen Bases with 64. He played for Houston in '47 and came up to the Cards after hitting .287 and 18 Homers for Columbus in '48. Tommy hit .267, .288 and .183 for the Cards in '49, '50 and '51. The Phils obtained the versatile infielder after the '52 season.
