Spent 11 years in majors, 8 of them with Cincinnati Reds - then was traded to Phillies. In 1947 he signed with Boston Braves and batted .333 in 96 games. Last season he hit .250 in 75 games. In 1940 he was voted National League's Most Valuable Player. At end of 1948 season, he accepted a job managing Quebec team in Canadian-American League.
Johnny was the sensation of the Dodgers' 1953 Spring Training Camp. He came very close to making the Dodgers in '52, but hurt his back after opening the season with Montreal. Johnny has only been playing professionally since '51. That year, after starting off with Newport News, he had a 21 and 3 record, 228 Strikeouts and a 1.67 ER.A. for Hazard of the Mountain States League.
Carl is the possessor of one of the finest throwing arms. Not many runners take an extra base on him, or even try to take one. He's also a good hitter, although his 1952 average represents a slump year for him. Not including last year's average, Carl had a .301 lifetime major league average, which shows that he did have an off season in 1952. He'll be back with the leaders in 1953 though.
