As a semi-pro in North Carolina Puddin-Head achieved an enviable reputation for hitting a long ball. It was said that his average was better than .500 and that he hit close to .700 while in the Navy. Hit .307 in 1947 with Terre Haute, his first year in pro ball. He was with three teams last season and appeared in 17 games for the Phillies, hitting .333.
The crafty lefty is one of baseball's best pitchers. He was in 27 games for the Dodgers in 1952, and he won 11 while losing 2 for a percentage of .846, best in the League. Preach walked 39 and struck out 83. His earned run average was a nice 3.11. He's been in baseball since 1938 with the Cardinals. After five seasons in the minors, he returned to big time with Pittsburgh.
