"Kip" first gained prominence in Baseball Circles as a top pitcher for Wisconsin U. in '50. The Phils were quick to spot good talent and signed him to a contract, sending him to Utica for seasoning. In '52 he posted a 3.62 E.R.A. mark with Schenectady and the next year followed up with a 9-1 record and 2.48 ERA. In '53, for the Phillies he split 6 decisions in relief.
Alcantara quite simply had the best year of his career in 2021. His 23 quality starts were the third most in the big leagues. With 201 strikeouts in 205.2 innings pitched, Alcantara became the first Miami pitcher since 2002 to crack 200 in both. Opponents batted a mere .223 off the veteran right-hander.
Jake Solters started his baseball career, at the age of 19, with the Fairmont Club, of the Middle Atlantic League in 1927. He played with Fairmont from 1927 to 1929, moving to Baltimore in 1930, Shreveport in 1931, Albany and Binghamton in 1932, back to Baltimore in 1933, and then joined the Boston Red Sox in 1934. He was traded to the St. Louis Browns in the middle of the 1935 season. He played with St. Louis in 1936 and was traded to the Cleveland Indians in 1935, along with Ivy Andrews and Lynn Lary, for Oral Hildebrand, Bill Knickerbocker, and Joe Vosmik. During his five years of major-league baseball, he played 623 games for a batting aver- age of .300.
