In his first five starts in 2021, Jake pitched to a 2.57 ERA and struck out 26 batters in 28 innings.



Came within one putout of pitching a no-hitter against the Cardinals in 1950. Had to be satisfied with a 1-hitter. Had a 9-11 record in 32 games. Best year - in either majors or minors - was 1949. Russ won 17 games and lost 8 for a percentage of .680. His 3.08 earned run average was lowest in League for a right handed pitcher. Came to majors with Cubs, end of 1946. First with Phils, 1949.



"Dizzy" is the oldest Tiger pitcher, but can still be depended upon to take his regular turn as a starter and come in for relief duty. Since he joined the Tigers in 1939, he has been a mainstay winning 20 games in '43, 27 in '44, 18 in '45 and 17 in '46. He had the best Earned Run Average in the League in 1944 (2.12). "Dizzy" has a daily radio show in Detroit. In '51 he helped with a Baseball Clinic for GI's overseas.
