The Tigers purchased the contract of this powerfully built righthander in 1957, after he had served a four-year apprenticeship in the minors. Bob started at Jamestown in 1953, and worked his way up to Toronto and Charleston.

Recalled to active duty as a Marine Pilot in May, 1952, Jerry put in 3 years of Service in World War II. He had a year of minor league ball under his belt when he came out of Service and spent 1946 at Binghamton. With Kansas City in '47 and Newark in '48, Jerry joined the Yanks in 1949. In his first year of Big League ball, he hit .275, led all American League Second Basemen in Fielding and was named "Rookie of the Year." A great "clutch" player, he hit .287 in 1950.

When the Mets were formed in 1962, the club's front office obtained many National League veterans for the team's roster. Hopeful that the experienced players could produce a winning ballclub, the Mets' owners soon learned that this was not the solution. Instead Casey Stengel began combing through the newly formed farm-chain and invited the more promising youngsters to an advance rookie school this past spring. There, Casey and his fine staff of coaches worked patiently with the future major league stars. Among the most promising of his pupils was hard-hitting Ed Kranepool. The powerful 19 year old split the '63 season between New York and Buffalo. In the International League, Ed batted .310 as he cracked 63 hits in 53 innings. A natural-born athlete, Ed set highschool scoring records in basketball.
