In 109 games last year, Max was charged with only three errors all season and finished the year with a fielding average of .986. West started his baseball career with the Sacramento Club in 1935 but he and another player were taken over by a bank in payment of a claim and sold to the San Francisco Missions. He played first base for the Missions in 1937 and batted an even .300. In 1938, his first full year in the majors, Max compiled a batting average of .234 but drove in 63 runs in 123 games.
