In 152 games for the Indians in 1949. Batted .224. Led American League catchers in putouts in 1947 and 1948 - in double plays and assists in 1948. First joined the Indians near end of 1941 season. Began 1942 with Baltimore (4 games), but moved right back up to Indians. In armed forces 3 years. Then returned to Cleveland as first-string catcher.
Tom showed marked improvement in each of his last 4 seasons as he helped pitch Montreal to 3 straight International League Pennants. He won 9 games in '50, 12 in '51, 14 in '52. Last year he had the best Won-Lost Percentage in the International League. With Schenectady in '48 he set a Canadian-American League record by fanning 25 batters in a 15-inning game.
The slender left-hander with the high kick is one of the game's top hurlers. Had 22 wins, and 14 losses, in 1951, the third straight year that he won 20 or more games. His 1951 E.R.A. was 2.98. Led the league in shutouts (7), complete games pitched (26). Tied for lead in strikeouts (164).
