Name that player!

Once an overpowering fastballer, Howie now relies on his tremendous curve and clever change-of-pace to get the opposing batters out. The shrewd 16 year veteran led the Cubs in Shutouts last year and served only 4 Home Run pitches all season. As a Cardinal in '43 and in '46 he led the N.L. with the lowest E.R.A. In '51 he was traded to Pittsburgh and became a Cub in '53.

Enjoying the best Major season of his career, Pres played 1st Base, 3rd and the Outfield in '54. He broke into the Majors with Brooklyn in '48 after leading the Western League in Runs, Triples and R.B.I.'s. After two more seasons in the Minors, he joined the Cubs in '50 and hit .253 in 80 games. He spent 2 years in Service and was traded to the Pirates in '53 in a 10-man deal.

Set a modern major league mark for pitchers in 1950 by appearing in 74 games. Set another mark by finishing 62. Won 16 and lost 7. Saved many games for the young Philadelphia pitching staff not shown in own record. Earned run average, 2.66. Voted the National League's most valuable player. In 3 World's Series games.
