The "Big Bear" has won 85 games in five seasons in the majors - all with Cleveland. Best year was 1952 when he won 22 and had an earned run average of 2.37, the second best in the American League. Also won 20 in 1951. His career earned run average is 2.96, one of the lowest in either league. Outstanding fast ball and control.
"At the end of the 1933 season with a batting average of 323 and the record of being one of the best hitting second basemen in the National League, Tony Piet was traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to Cincinnati on November 17. His full name is Anthony F. Pietruszka, but it was quickly shortened to Tony Piet. He broke into professional baseball in Texas and the Pirates found him in Wichita, where in 1931 he batted .336 and scored 42 stolen bases. The previous year at Waco, Texas, he had banged out 26 home runs. Tony was born in Chicago. He stands 5 feet, 11 inches high and weighs around 180 pounds, He bats right-handed and throws right-handed."
Billy's playing career started in 1928 and ended in 1950. He was chosen on every National League All-Star team from '34 to '43. and played in 4 World Series. Billy starred for the Cubs from '31 to '41 and for the Dodgers from '41 to '46. He was playing-manager for the Pirates in '47 and Minneapolis in 1948. He also managed Richmond in 1951 before being added to the Dodger coaching staff. Billy was in the Service during World War II.
